Reading Update

Our second grade readers have been doing an amazing job of building reading stamina.  Stamina is being able to “stick” with a task for a long period of time.  This week they we are getting close to be real readers for 20 minutes.. YAY!   We have learned that a real reader gets started quickly, stays quiet, chooses their own space,  keeps their eyes on their books, does their reading assignment,  leaves thinking tracks about their reading and stays in the one place.

This week we have also learned how to put the pieces of the reading puzzle together by thinking about the book before we read and during our reading.   Focusing  on the characters of a fiction text along with the problem and the solution to the story helps us “put it all together”.   Keep up the great reading at home!

Reading Update

We are welcoming 2017 in with series book clubs.  Each student is part of a series book club with 3-4 other friends.   We will be focusing on noticing patterns while we read about the character’s traits, the problems in the story and the lessons that were learned by the characters.  This requires our readers to jot sticky notes  while they are independently reading so that they are prepared to share for their club conservation.    Children will begin to notice patterns within a series of books, get connected to the characters and hopefully feel inspired to read them all :).

Reading Update

Today we wrapped up our Character Study unit by putting on Reader’s Theater plays.  The children worked hard all week preparing for their plays by dividing parts, practicing their lines and then stepping into the character’s shoes to bring them life.  Beyond proud of all of their hard work and creativity.

Reading Update

Our second grade readers have been working on being prepared for their reading groups/partners by noticing a character’s problem in the story,  traits and feelings that stick out and asking the 5W’s (who? what? where? when? why?).    Not only do readers come prepared to share, they also come prepared to listen and “extend” the conversation by asking questions.   Paying attention to the character and stepping into their shoes helps readers make sense of what is happening.  This week we will be reading with expression, varying our voice cadence, making use of punctuation and discovering the power of a storyteller.  Keep up the great work readers!

Reading Celebration!

Our little readers celebrated on Monday by thinking back to being a kindergarten, first grade and now a second grade reader.  We laid out books that we may have read in each grade and discussed the similarities and the differences between the texts.   We set up a museum to visit and admire how much we have grown as readers, and to celebrate being BIG TIME second grade readers.   I am so very proud of these little readers!

Reading Update!

Our second grade readers are making VIVID visualizations while they read.  Visualizing is a strategy that we use to develop a readers understanding of text.   We have learned how to stop while we read and make pictures in our minds that change like a movie as the story develops.  Using sticky notes as a tool for reading, we are able to make a sketch of our mental image and visualize specific portions of the story.  Readers also journal about their visualizations in their reading journal.  Another way we can practice visualization is to talk with another reader and share our image by saying, “When I read _______, I visualized________.”
