Math Update

We have started a short unit on telling time to the nearest five minute and identifying a.m. versus p.m activities.  Here is the most recent parent letter:

We will also be practicing telling time on the ipads.  Here are a few of the apps that we will be using  in the classroom ( Click on the picture for a “clearer” view):

Math Update

Happy New Year!!!!  Our second grade mathematicians are learning how to solve multi-digit subtraction problems.   Below please note the strategies that your child will be using to solve these equations.   These strategies are different from how you and I learned “back in the day”, but they do promote deeper understanding of the concepts.  We will be spending the next three weeks deepening our knowledge of this concept.  There are a few good apps to use to practice these skills, make sure to check the blog in the upcoming weeks for links to these apps to put on any new devices at home :).

Math Update!

Now that we have finished up our first unit of math, we are ready to start some new learning!   As a second grade team, we are always striving to meet the needs of each and every individual student.

Today, many of our students will be taking part in a “math switch” in which they may be traveling to a different second grade classroom for instruction.  Each group of math learners will be working on the same math concepts/lessons each day, but the pace and practice may look a little different.  We are very excited about this opportunity for your child and can’t wait to dig in!   Please feel free to e-mail us if you have an questions or concerns.

Thanks!

The Doubles Rap

Today our friends practiced “the doubles” addition facts ( 2+2=4, 3+3=6, etc).  We learned a rap that could help us remember the facts quickly without having to clap and count on.   Today your child will be coming home with doubles flashcards to practice at home and they would LOVE to sing the rap for you too :).

We used our doubles facts to help us with facts that are close to doubles too.

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY!!!

Today we started new “math switch” groups.  Second graders will be practicing money counting skills, including pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.  Here are a few apps that would be a fun way to practice at home, but you can always make a game out of counting loose change too :).
