Welcome 2nd Grade 2018-2019
Welcome to our new second grade families! Please make sure to register for email subscriptions (upper right hand corner of blog) which alerts you via email when our classroom blog is updated. We use the blog for classroom happenings, activities, and school special events.
Looking forward to the upcoming year… ENJOY YOUR SUMMER and treasure up some small moments to write about in the fall! We will post a classroom supply list during the first few weeks of July (crazy to think about).
Our Future is Bright!
It is with mixed emotion that I ponder the thought of saying good-bye to 25 of the MOST AMAZING second grade children. These children have become “my kiddos” and I love them all so dearly! We have treasured many memories together and grown as learners. Not only have we learned three digit addition, comprehension strategies and other curriculum concepts, but I trust that your child has gained confidence, a sense of self worth, respect for others and a knowledge of just how special they are. Indeed they are INCREDIBLY SPECIAL! Thank you for entrusting me with your precious jewels this year, they have richly blessed my life.
Math Update
Our second graders will be using various strategies including proof drawings, show all totals and new groups above/below to solve three digit equations. The children will experiment with the strategies and discover which strategy works best for them. Our main focus is on explaining the steps that we take to solve an equation. We are very excited for this adventure :)!

Would LOVE to have our class win! Get a pizza and tell them your child is in Mrs. Kuieck’s Class at Georgetown!
Math Update
Today we learned two strategies for how to solve two digit subtraction equations. This is a crucial skill in second grade and also something that simply takes practice to develop. The children were amazing today and worked so hard! Here is an explanation of the methods that we will be using (you may want to keep handy for upcoming homework :)).

Math Update
This week we started a new unit in math that includes counting money using pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars. Each day our second graders will be handling money through games and activities.
It would be great to practice counting money at home by identifying the coins, identifying the values, separating into groups of similar coins and counting the total amounts (less than $2.00). The more practice and handling of actual money will help children make a connection between coins and their values.
Here is a parent letter that describes our study of money:
