We’ve Been Busy!

Our second graders have been busy in the classroom!   Here are a few updates:

Reading-   We are wrapping up our study of fairy tales and using expression while we read.   Our readers learned to use their voice, their gestures and rate of reading to bring stories to life.   Many fairy tales and fables teach important lessons that we could use in our own lives.  This week we celebrated our learning by putting on a play about the Tortoise and the Hare.   Next week we will be investigating non fiction text based around science topics…  we are excited!

Writing –  Writers write stories that are gripping and have us at the edge of our seats!!!!   We have focused on writing a small moment story about one event, full of dialogue, action, feelings, thoughts, show not tell and descriptive words.  They have completely amazed me!    Next week we will be starting a group writing project around our science topic of plants.  If you happen to have any plant books or resources at home, we would LOVE to borrow them from you.

Math – We have completed our last unit where we learned about arrays and fractions.   In the next few weeks, we will be having math camp and reviewing important concepts and solving real world problems.

Science – Our little scientists our enjoying investigating plants.  We are learning about plant parts and the function that each does.  Today we learned about the life cycle of a plant (seed, seedling, adult plant, adult plant with flowers, adult plant with fruit).

Today we also had a special presenter in the classroom.  Mrs. Rasch from the Ottawa County Dispatch came to talk with us about 911 safety.  The kids were very engaged and interested in her tidbits for safety.  They will be bringing home some information to share with you as well.

Today was our last day of library and Reading Counts.  Due to the RC system being down for two weeks, Mrs. VandenBerg is adjusting goals and we will celebrate our reading in the next few weeks.  Thanks for all of your support at home and at school…. we definitely have some amazing readers in our class!
