Hopefully all of the snow and cold weather is behind us and we can FINALLY enjoy some warmer spring weather…. fingers crossed! Our second graders are growing by leaps and bounds and I am so proud of each of them! Here is what we are up to in the classroom:
Writer’s Workshop: This week we began our last small moment writing unit. We have learned that good writers use emotions, special people, places and things to find a “just right” seed story. In the next few weeks, our writers will be working on fine tuning their writing including: writing a gripping lead, using similes, adding dialogue, stretching out the “meat” of the story bit by bit by using adjectives and adverbs, and finally wrapping up the story in a meaningful way.
Reader’s Workshop: We are having a GREAT time using expression while we read fiction, fantasy and fairy tales. Getting connected to the characters and paying attention to when there are strong feelings helps readers use a storytellers voice. Our readers are very excited to perform their readers theaters for the class on Friday and show off their reading expression.
Math: This week we have invested three digit numbers by building them different ways, comparing and adding 1, 10 or 100. This will prepare our learners for three digit addition and subtraction equations. Please see the parent letter below for more information.
Science: We have been learning about our wonderful planet, nick named “the big blue marble” because it is covered with 75% water. Google Earth has allowed us to travel to various landforms around the world including mountains, hills, plateaus, islands, peninsulas and plains. Today we used clay to build some of these landforms. We will investigate different bodies of water in the days to come as well.
