Updates!

This month is flying by!!!!!   Our second graders have been non fiction readers and writers as well as investigators of geometry.  Here are a  few updates:

Reading:  In reading non fiction text, our second graders are working on specific comprehension strategies, including “think and jot” and leaving thinking tracks.  Retelling non fiction text involves stating facts, sharing the “main idea” of the text as well as sharing our learnings and lingering questions.   Our second graders have learned SO MANY facts about varying topics from both their own reading and listening to others share their discoveries through reading partnerships.  We will be wrapping up our non fiction unit this coming week.

Writing:  WOW!  Our second graders are using non fiction text features in their own teaching text including table of contents, introductions, diagrams, glossaries, captions, headings, “how-to’s” and fun facts.  We will be wrapping up our unit with a celebration on Friday with an opportunity to share our book with first graders.  Here is a website we enjoyed visiting to gather information for animal teaching books:  NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC FOR KIDS

Math:  Inches, centimeters, feet and yards… OH MY!   In the past two weeks, we have focused on describing both 2D and 3D shapes as well as experimenting with different units of measurement.   When we return from Christmas Vacation we will begin a unit on subtraction.  Any additional practice that you could provide over the break would be much appreciated.  Here are a few subtractions apps that would be helpful:

Social Studies:  We are exploring history and how we learn about things that have happened in the past.  In reading a few books, we were challenged to think about what Hudsonville was like 50, even 100 years ago as well as what may have been on the land that our houses were built on.  This week we will discuss the positive and negative consequences of changes to our communities.

Looking forward to celebrating the holiday season with our second graders on Friday the 20th at 12:45 – 1:45.
