Writer’s Celebration!

Today we celebrated our writing with Ms. Yankee’s class.  Our second graders have worked hard to be  mindful writers, by adding details to their seed stories, using show not tell, adding a strong lead/ending and using dialogue.  They were able to move through the writing process, even revising and editing their pieces!   After our share time, we set up a story museum and had a chance to read many of our classroom friend’s stories.

The highlight of our celebration was having a “toast”.   Our little writers had an opportunity to share a toast/ say kind words to other friends in the classroom for everyone to hear.  This was absolutely adorable to hear!   Keep up the great work writers!

Writing Update

Our second grade writers celebrated this past Thursday by sharing with Mrs. Greenlund’s class all of the “craft” that they are using in their stories.   We also noticed what our classmates were doing in their stories.   The children have strived to add many “crafts” into their personal narratives;   strong lead (talking, sound effect or snapshot), details, adjectives, adverbs, similes, show not tell, dialogue and story ending.    They have all grown so much as writers!  I am beyond proud of all of their hard work this unit!  We will begin a study of non fiction writing after the holiday break.

Informational Writing Celebration!

Our second graders have worked INCREDIBLY hard to complete their informational books to teach others about a specific topic.  They included many facts, text features ( diagrams, how to’s, labels, captions, glossaries, table of contents and many more), and used a wonderful “teaching” voice.    Today we were able to celebrate with Mrs. Ray’s class and share all of our learnings.   I am so proud of all of our writers!I

Writer’s Celebration

Today we celebrated our writing with second grade friends from other classrooms.   We were able to share all of the craft in our stories including catchy leads, show not tell, adjectives, adverbs, dialogue and strong endings.   Cynthia Rylant was a great mentor for our writers and she definitely helped us grow!   Of course, we had to end our celebration with a toast to one another and to all of our hard work!   Next week, we will begin to investigate informational writing.

Writer’s Celebration!

Today we wrapped up our first unit of writing with a writer’s celebration.  Each child chose a piece that they wanted to fix up and fancy ( revision and editing) in preparation to share their work with the class.  Our second graders were THRILLED to read their stories and also receive feedback from their friends.  We ended our celebration with a “toast”.  Many children even wanted to make their own “toasts” to children in the classroom……  such kind hearts they have!    I am so proud of each of my little writers!

Non Fiction Writer’s Celebration

Today we ended our non-fiction writing unit with a wonderful celebration.  Each child constructed a non fiction text that taught readers all about their topic.  We used teaching pages, diagrams, how tos, indexes, glossaries, surveys, fun facts and learn more pages to help connect our readers to valuable information.

At our celebration, each child presented to the classroom the main idea of their text as well as shared an important text feature.  We then extended our celebration into our Reader’s Workshop time by using our classmates texts to practice retelling non fiction.  Children read 4 non fiction books from cover to cover and wrote down what they had learned from the text.   This was a great opportunity to celebrate with each other!  Our second graders have such big hearts and really try to build each other up and make them feel special :).  I am SO PROUD of each and every one of them!
