Math Update

Happy New Year!!!!  Our second grade mathematicians are learning how to solve multi-digit subtraction problems.   Below please note the strategies that your child will be using to solve these equations.   These strategies are different from how you and I learned “back in the day”, but they do promote deeper understanding of the concepts.  We will be spending the next three weeks deepening our knowledge of this concept.  There are a few good apps to use to practice these skills, make sure to check the blog in the upcoming weeks for links to these apps to put on any new devices at home :).

Math Fact Apps

Building addition and subtraction fact fluency is a huge part of our goal as mathematicians in second grade.. We practice in the classroom each day through various games, activities and songs. We will be sending home flashcards to review at home in the upcoming weeks. There are also many GREAT apps that provide additional support to our little mathematicians, the best part is that they have fun doing it. Here are a few to check out and possibly download to your personal devices:

Updates for March 26, 2012

Hi Families,

We have a short week ahead of us before spring break begins on Friday :)!

Here a few of the things we have been busy working on in the classroom.

Writing

We have been immersing ourselves in a variety of reviews including, book reviews, ipod app reviews, movie reviews, and restaurant reviews just to name a few.  We have done this to prepare to write reviews of our own.  I can’t wait to see each child’s opinions shine through in their writing.

Daily 5/Reading

We have been concentrating on using the wondering strategy during non-fiction reading pertaining to our current study of science, matter.   We are really targeting retelling of fiction stories  by working with our partners and retelling the highlights of the story by identifying character attributes, setting of the story and the important events.  Have your child retell the books that they read at home to you as well :).

Math

Subtraction with Regrouping continues to be our focus.  We have been practicing subtraction facts to improve our fluency or speed of recall.  Any extra support you could provide at home would be much appreciated.  Make sure to check out all of the apps and games linked on a previous post   SUBTRACTION GAMES.

Here are a few things to be aware of for this week:

* NO HOMEWORK THIS WEEK-  HAPPY SPRING BREAK!

* Library on THURSDAY

* Talent Show on THURSDAY

* Dr. Seuss CAFE on Wednesday – ( We will have 1st graders as our guests.)

* We are in need of a few supplies in the classroom.  If you are willing to provide any of these materials, we would greatly appreciate it :):   Anti bacterial Surface Wipes and Dry Erase Markers.

Here’s to a great week!

Mrs. Kuieck:)

As we are learning about two digit subtraction, it is very important to build the fluency of our basic subtraction facts.  You can help your child at home by doing flashcards, playing subtraction games, online games and apps available on an ipod touch, ipad or iphone.
